Extension of CAP Torreforta – La Granja

Extension of CAP Torreforta – La Granja

The extension of the Torreforta-La Granja Health Center, in Tarragona, is a health infrastructure that responds to the need of the Catalan Health Institute to expand its capacity in different parts of the territory, in the post-covid framework, which highlighted the need to strengthen the local health network.

The need and urgency of having the services as soon as possible led to the conception of the building from industrialized modules. The Lean Construction methodology together with the modular system allowed to reduce the works in situ to only 18 weeks.

The extension has 51 consultations distributed over 3 floors, which incorporates the pediatric service, sexual and reproductive health care, rehabilitation, emergencies, as well as general medicine consultations and a community activity room. With all this, the capacity of the Health Center is increased to 6,150m2.

The new construction is related to the existing building through a ceramic socket that completely embraces the new volumetry. The finish of white metal panels that finishes the new body reducing the presence of the volume that completes the apple. The configuration of the facades responds to the solar orientation: while in the north facade the openings allow the entry of indirect light, in the south facade the building incorporates solar protections, made up of perforated metal sheets.

The modular construction generates a rigid grid on which the emptying of 3 courtyards is generated. The order generated by the modular construction and its rigid axes is broken with the opening of these courtyards, which form a triple height around which the waiting and circulation areas are configured.

The amplitude and the crossed visuals that are generated thanks to the spaces in triple height, bathed by the light that filters its openings, in addition to the clarity in the functional scheme of the building, seek to generate a peaceful hospital environment, putting the user at the core of the design and contributing to its well-being.
